Pequonnock River - Urban Bird Observation

For the last few months, the notable absence of birds along the urban Pequonnock River waterway is striking.  Trees are sparse along this industrial area and in the East Bridgeport, CT section a preponderance of the buildings are empty or unused.  Although there is a definite relationship of bird observation to habitat availability including trees, there are few recent research studies which document this aspect of the effect of urbanization on native and migrating bird species.  The good news is that Peregrine Falcons have consistently maintained nests in the Bridgeport, Stratford, and Stamford, CT areas.  Yesterday, another attempt was made to try and locate birds along this area of the Pequonnock River.  The day was sunny with minimal wind and yet no birds observed.    This is a statement about the need for habitat restoration along the river and in the neighborhoods adjacent to the river.  Importantly, the businesses in the area would not be negatively affected by the establishment of open space, new urban parks, and a State of Connecticut Greenway.

A website of some of the active birders and birds sighted in Connecticut are found in the attached link.  This link; however, rarely, if ever has included urban Bridgeport, CT and the lower Pequonnock River.  So, if any readers are in the area and observe any birds, kindly post your observations on this blog:
